Christchurch Digger Activities 

If your child has a serious thing for diggers, you already know that a regular family day out has to clear a fairly specific bar. Playgrounds are fine. Trampoline parks are fine. But the moment a real machine appears, everything else gets dropped.

That is where we come in. Little Rides spends a good chunk of the year out at events, festivals and community days across Christchurch and Canterbury, with our mini digger and built-in stone pit set up and ready for tamariki to climb into. If you have not booked a private hire yet, catching us at a public event is one of the best free things to do in Christchurch with a digger-mad kid.

 

Where you might have already seen us

Over the past year we have been part of some of the biggest family events in the region. Children's Day 2026 was a brilliant one for us, with a steady stream of kids in hard hats and hi-vis taking turns at the controls. The Christchurch A&P Show is another we love being part of, alongside the tractors and animals and everything else that makes the show such a Canterbury fixture.

We turn up to plenty of smaller community events too. School galas, council family days, charity fundraisers. If you are scrolling through what is on in Christchurch this weekend and you spot us in the line-up, come and say hello. The kids can have a turn for free, and we are always up for a chat with parents.

 

How to find out where we will be next

The easiest way is to follow us on social media. We post our upcoming event schedule there as bookings come in, so you can plan ahead. The Little Rides Instagram and Facebook are where we share most of our day-to-day, including behind the scenes from events and the occasional very muddy photo.

Our preschool and education centre visits

One of the most rewarding parts of running Little Rides is taking the digger out to early childhood centres, preschools and kohanga reo across Canterbury. These are free visits and they happen as often as we can manage them alongside the paid bookings that fund them.

If you spot a Little Rides post about a centre we have just visited, that is what is happening. We will keep at it for as long as we can.

 

Other things worth doing in Christchurch with a digger fan

Since we have you here, a few other ideas for keeping a construction-obsessed child happy in Christchurch.

The Margaret Mahy Family Playground in town has a digger-themed sandpit area that small kids tend to gravitate towards, and it is free. Worth a morning out.

Ferrymead Heritage Park has plenty of working machinery, vintage trams and the kind of mechanical interest that lands well with kids who like things that move. Their event days are particularly good.

Driving past actual worksites still ranks surprisingly high on the list of cheap thrills for a four-year-old. The rebuild around the central city has thinned out compared to a few years ago but there is usually something happening worth a slow drive past.

And if all else fails, our booking page is always open. A four-hour hire on a Saturday turns your back lawn into the best worksite in town.
